Juan is not actually a native of 2056. He is an orphan of a closed juncture from the far distant future. (estimated to be some time in the early 2100's) That future ceased to exist in the critical shift that toppled the Four Monarchs. It was a world of absolute information control. The wizards who ultimately banded together to fight and eventually defeat the four monarchs in the late twenty first century decreed that all knowledge of magic was to be supressed to prevent another power from picking up where the monarchs had left off.
In time that decree grew into an entire organization bent on controlling and supressing all knowledge of chi, magic, technology or anything else that could threaten their reign.
Juan grew up hating that opressive society and decided to join a rebel band of freedom loving historians. This tiny band sought to bring about a renaissance of learning and culture. Their secret headquarters was located in a ruined temple inside of Ming I's former realm. As the authorities were closing in on them they split up hoping that one of them could lie low and wait for the hunt to die down before beginning their rebellion anew. Most were killed or captured. Juan stumbled into a portal to the Netherworld. Before he knew what was happening the Ascended had taken over the world and the future he knew was gone forever.
Juan wandered the netherworld for some time. He was fascinated to learn that the Four Monarchs, boogie men of his youth, still existed. It was an opportunity for learning. Saddly, none of the Monarchs were particularly interested in educating a man from a dead future and Juan quickly found himself on the run being chased by forces from the Fire Pagoda. He managed to elude them, but only by leaving the Netherworld. That was when he found himself in 2056.
In 2056 Juan found himself in familiar territory. Though the Architects' tactics were different from those he was used to and propoganda was a new concept to him, Juan quickly recognised the repressive police state of 2056 for what it was. He wasted no time in forming a small band of freedom fighters to strike back against the forces of evil. Although they enjoyed a number of successes early on, it was only a matter of time before the Buro moved in and stamped them out, forcing Juan to retreat back into the Netherworld to seek help.
This time he resurfaced in the modern juncture. 1999 fascinated Juan. Information was everywhere. You can find anything on the internet! His first month or so in 1999 was spent in something of a state of information overload taking in all that he could.
Now our hero has linked up with the Dragons in the modern juncture. One day he will return to 2056 to destroy the Architects or die trying. For now he gathers his forces and does what good he can.
